做人你别太Karen，这个英文名可太有故事了

2020把 Karen 这个名字带火了一波，原因跟这个有点特殊的年份有很大关系。

A woman who was caught on video calling the police and claiming there was an "African-American man threatening her life" has apologized said her actions were "unacceptable." The video, which has been viewed over 14 million times, was posted to Twitter by screenwriter Melody Cooper on Monday. She said her brother recorded the video after politely asking the woman to "put her dog on the leash" in a protected area of central park.

Karen从哪儿来？

为什么人们要用 Karen 这个名字呢？前文提到了时代背景所致，其实还有另一个走红的原因：

Robin Queen, the chairwoman of the linguistics department at University of Michigan, has looked closely at this question and her exploration led her to, of all people, Dane Cook. His 2005 comedy album contains a riff called “The Friend Nobody Likes”: “There is one person in a group of friends that nobody likes,” Mr. Cook says, using an expletive to emphasize how much they are, in fact, disliked. As an “example” of this person, he describes a woman named Karen.

学者 Robin Queen 解释到，Karen 的源起来自2005年喜剧演员 Dane Cook 讲的一个段子——“没人喜欢的朋友”，里面说每个人的小圈子里，总有一个叫 Karen 的女人。她非常招人讨厌，大家跟她都是“塑料姐妹”，背地里都在说她坏话。

英语文化里，这样的代名词还有很多，比如目中无人、不讲理的的欧美女性叫做 Miss Ann，对种族和社会问题一无所知却时刻享受特权的白人女孩叫 Becky。

Karen梗背后的歧视争议

就像“直男”、“大妈”、“女拳”这样带性别符号的新词一样，Karen 梗直指白人中年女性。很多人认为，Karen 这个梗带着浓重的性别歧视意味，部分女性“更年期”的一些情绪特征、爱吹毛求疵的特点被无限放大。虽然“Karen”是一个群体的泛指，但运用到其他种族、性别身上，这个代号还是会被沿用，在 Karen 的基础上变成“男性Karen”、“黑人Karen”等等。

“I spend a lot of time on Twitter, so I find it rather annoying,” says Karen Geier, a writer and podcaster from Toronto. “Anything you say, people can be like, ‘OK, well, whatever, KAREN’ – but that's not even how the meme is supposed to be used.
